ONE of the developers at the centre of the Robinson scandal last night admitted he gave money to the DUP.

Property tycoon Ken Campbell revealed he gave the party between pounds 4,000 and pounds 5,000 "several years ago".

His spokesman said: "He did make a small contribution to the DUP several years ago. He never made a personal donation to Iris or Peter Robinson."

The admission comes as the DUP hierarchy desperately tries to get back to "business as usual" at the Assembly Buildings in East Belfast.

The revelation also came as Acting First Minister Arlene Foster finished her first day at Stormont in Peter Robinson's shoes.

Meanwhile, the main political parties last night expressed fresh hopes a deal could be struck over devolving policing powers to Stormont.

Both Sinn Fein and the Democratic Unionists struck a more positive note after months of deadlock.

The devolution of powers has been held up by rows between the two parties over timing, with Sinn Fein threatening serious consequences for the fragile Executive if the DUP did not agree to a speedy transfer.

Sinn Fein replica breitling president Gerry Adams refused to elaborate on the details of the talks but he said: "We believe that with political will these difficulties can be resolved.

"These discussions, and it has to involve all of the parties, but particularly between ourselves and the DUP, are hugely important. The issues pre-date the controversies of recent times.

"We will not be dealing with the detail of the discussions, except to say, that if the political will is there, it is our view that these matters can be resolved."

Meanwhile, DUP Finance Minister Sammy Wilson said he was optimistic.

However, he stressed that outstanding issues still had to be resolved.

The East Antrim MP added: "We are quite happy to get it done but we are not going to minimise the issues which have to be resolved.

"But we will seek to do this job, do it as quickly as possible and do it only once we are sure we have a secure foundation to have this important function.

"Once the issues are resolved, we are up for the deal."

The UK treasury has already offered a pounds 1billion package to establish the region's new justice ministry.

While both parties have accepted the financial deal, the DUP has insisted other so-called confidence-building measures were needed.

Among the sticking points was the party's demand for changes to handling controversial Orange parades.

While there was no indication whether progress had been made on this particular issue, both parties suggested movement on the overall hold-up was imminent.

Mr Adams said: "Sometimes, the least said the soonest mended. We are not going to be saying anything about the detail and our focus is about straightening this out."

While Mr Robinson has indicated his intention to remain involved in the devolution talks despite temporarily stepping down as First Minister, he has yet to enter the current round of negotiations.
