AT 6ft 6in tall, rugby-playing ex-Army man Euan Sutherland is a dab hand at applying nail varnish or blusher.

Wearing facepacks and rooting through women's handbags is all in a day's work for Superdrug's chief executive.

Euan, 38, has even turned up at the office with his nails done.

And with the help of Kelly Brook, Cindy Crawford and Mischa Barton, he has built Superdrug into a pounds 1billion business.

He has had a crash course in the beauty business since taking over in 2003. He said: "It has been a massive learning curve but I have been getting lots of practice."

Euan has changed the high street chain from low budget pharmacy to fashion-conscious beauty retailer.

He has just opened two rebranded stores with bright pink fascias in Glasgow and Edinburgh.

Euan said: "Initially I had concerns men might be put off but the stores are more popular with them than any others. The last 18 months have seen a real explosion in male beauty products.

"When David Beckham got his chest waxed, we saw a big increase in men coming in for waxing advice. They also see Russell Brand wearing eyeliner and realise it will make them a lot more confident.

"We had a 65-year-old man come in and ask for advice on his nails. He took off his socks to reveal bright pink nails. We sent him away with a ruby shimmer and he was delighted."

After training to be an army officer with the Royal Highland Fusiliers, Euan took a business studies course before joining the Boots' graduate training scheme. He then helped turn around the fortunes of the Currys electrical goods chain. Euan's first step on joining Superdrug was to visit NY beauty emporium Henri Bendel to get an understanding of why women love cosmetics.

"Before I knew it, I was in the middle of the shop floor with a facepack on," he said.

Euan's innovative marketing research involved getting groups of women to reveal the contents of their handbags and telling them he would sell them whatever fell out.

He learned about fragrances, colouring - and even carried out makeovers on staff.

Euan said: "The first time I did a makeover I was really nervous but I think I did a pretty good job."

Euan has
embroidered patches been touring UK stores with Strictly Come Dancing star Kelly Brook who has an exclusive fragrance deal with the firm. He said: "Kelly is a great ambassador, incredibly hard working and a lovely girl."

What qualities does he look for?

He said: "I want someone prepared to learn then challenge. You always have to find ways of being creative in what you do."
