House break spree may be

A local man with a 16-year record of burglaries was held on bail Friday for allegedly stealing women's handbags from a Del Prete Drive home.
Police said that Michael Bruzzese, 40, of 93 Hersey St., is connected to a dozen or more recent house breaks in the Elm Street area.
He is also wanted for similar crimes in Maryland and has a criminal record dating back to 1989 that includes several breaking and entering charges, a prosecutor said on Friday. He has defaulted on court appearances seven times in Massachusetts.
Considered a flight risk, Bruzzese was held in lieu Brass Brooch of $15,000 bail, or a $150,000 surety bond, on the orders of Judge Kevin O'Dea.
According to police reports on file in court, officers Roland Simonelli and Phillip Emmot responded to a 911 call Thursday night for a report of a suspicious man walking in the back yard of an Elm Street home.
The description of the suspect - short, white male, 35 to 40- years old, with a scruffy beard - matched the description of someone spotted breaking into other homes in the area this summer, the report said.
Police had received several reports that the burglar was entering homes, sometimes while they were asleep, and stealing items.
By the time officers arrived Thursday night, the man had run away, so Pandora Necklace Charm officers waited at Bruzzese's address on Hersey Street with a K-9 unit to assist in the search.
In less than 30 minutes, Bruzzese came walking down Hersey Street holding Coach and Burberry women's handbags. He claimed he was coming from a cousin's house and the bags were his.
The Coach bag, however, contained a checkbook with someone else's name and address.
At that point, Bruzzese tried to run from the officers but he was tackled and placed under arrest after a struggle. The officers sustained minor injuries.
Bruzzese is charged with larceny of property over $250, burglary and resisting arrest.
As of Friday morning, detectives had obtained a search warrant for
embroidered patches Bruzzese's home and found property reported stolen from a house on Beal Street on Aug. 13. They said it appeared there were other stolen items in the home and more charges could be added.
Bruzzese is scheduled to return to court Sept. 30.
